Inna from Russia during her Study & Work Program in Vancouver

Inna is from Russia and was enrolled in our Study & Work Program.

After obtaining her Master degree in Commerce and working for almost two years in a travel agency in Russia, she decided to come to Vancouver because after being to the USA already, she wanted to discover Canada.

She started her adventure with one and half months of intensive English study at one of our school partners located downtown Vancouver. Six weeks before starting her job, she met one of our STEPWEST placement coordinators to have a chat about her job expectations. After reviewing her Canadian-style resume, and going to a couple job interview preparation seminars, she was ready for real job interviews. She did a great job on her first one and was hired as a cashier in a restaurant in front of Kitsilano beach.

As a part of our thorough monitoring, we went to see Inna at her work two weeks ago (see pic above). She really liked her experience and her responsibilities at the restaurant. Her main tasks were to take orders, prepare food and to help her colleagues in the restaurant when they needed. Learning how to use the machines and utilities was what she preferred the most.  However, this, along with understanding a range of customer orders were the most challenging part of her job.

Throughout this experience, she improved her English level and communication skills immensely. It also gave her a chance to meet new people from all over the world. This adventure will definitely help her in the future when she will travel back to Russia.

Her hotel internship experience in Vancouver
“Through my 7 months hotel practicum, I learned so many things which I could not gain from just sitting in a classroom. At the very beginning, I hesitated to work as a house keeping attendant. But as I started working there, I found out that the whole hotel department is connected and if I cant respect what Im doing or what others are doing, I wont be able to work as a team. I learned that team work is one the most important point in hospitality industry.”
